I studied engineering at the University of Liverpool, and before joining the BAE Systems graduate programme, I did an internship elsewhere in construction.
During that time, I was also a reserve officer for the Royal Navy, so joining BAE Systems allowed me to combine my interests and experiences, all in one place.
I’m a procurement officer working on naval ships. In my role, I get to work with the latest innovations and technology advancements, which is fascinating as with every new generation of ship there are new pieces of kit and many changes and improvements to the functionality. It’s very important work and I’m proud of the role I play in supporting those who protect us at a global level.
BAE Systems is one of the best company’s I’ve worked for in terms of work-life balance. Within my team I get to work flexible hours, which for me means I get to walk my dog and exercise during the day. I personally think you get the best out of people when there’s less of a rigid schedule.ZaraGraduate Procurement Officer
The camaraderie here is great and there are also many social activities to participate in – for example, we recently went on a walking social, and I got to bring my puppy along which was followed by a lovely lunch. There are so many things going on for you to be involved in and everyone is encouraged to share their ideas for new social activities we can plan.
As part of the graduate programme, we have stretch assignments which allows you to explore initiatives outside of your day-to-day role. I’m making the most of it and dipping my toes into various areas and roles to help further my skills and gain new experiences - for example, I lead ‘Immersion’ (the onboarding of new graduates). I find this an interesting area because I get to interact with colleagues in other roles and sites from across the wider business. I introduce new graduates to the senior management teams, create timetables and conduct visits to the ships and naval museums in Portsmouth. I’m also learning about project management – I honestly don’t think I’d have had the scope of opportunities I’ve had if I’d chosen to work anywhere else.
If you’re looking for a graduate programme that gives you flexibility, both personally, and professionally, BAE Systems is the place for you.
