A career-change with purpose
Before joining BAE Systems, I was working in the NHS as a senior clinician. I was ready for a new challenge and an opportunity to build a new career, but I struggled to identify another field of work that I would find fulfilling.
During a conversation with friends, someone mentioned they worked as a human factors engineer. I became increasingly interested and started researching the role.
My husband had joined BAE Systems three years earlier, and I’d seen him flourish through the opportunities available to him and the satisfaction he gained from his work. Applying for a role in human factors felt like the right next step for me.
Learning something new
Since joining the graduate programme I’ve embraced the opportunities to learn new skills and start meaningful work supporting the design of a submarine.
I work alongside serving and former submariners whose expertise is vital in decision-making, helping ensure designs optimise wellbeing and safety.
Joining a large team was initially daunting, but I now look forward to being in the office and feel a real connection with my colleagues.
Making a difference
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role has been working in mock-up environments. Recently, I supported an assessment comparing different arrangements of a key submarine compartment while gathering feedback from serving submariners to help inform design decisions.
I’ve also recently started work on an emergency system onboard a submarine. While the work is challenging, I’m proud to be contributing to an area that supports crew safety.

Looking ahead
Human factors covers a wide range of areas, including site safety, safety case and engineering. I’m looking forward to exploring different specialisms, extending my technical knowledge and continuing to learn as I progress through the graduate programme.
While it’s still early in my career, I’m excited about what lies ahead and proud to play a part in supporting the production of a submarine and improving the lives of those who protect us.
