From cross-Solent commutes to cross-functional skills, Alfie’s hands-on career is thriving at BAE Systems in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
Meet Alfie - Assembly Technician, UK

Before joining BAE Systems, I worked as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) technician but I was looking for something more inspiring - a role where I could build a long-term career and learn new skills.

When I applied to BAE Systems, it was the only application I submitted that year. I only wanted to work for the best - and everything I’d heard about the Company confirmed that it was the right choice.

I started as an apprentice technician with a cross-Solent commute each day from the New Forest - it's worth it. The apprenticeship gave me the training, support, and opportunities I’d been looking for - and I haven’t looked back since.

Working in Cowes is never boring. Over the last four years, I’ve watched the site grow busier and more dynamic, filled with skilled and creative people. The variety of work here is what keeps things exciting. Every product is different, which means every day brings new solutions to find.

What I really appreciate is how hands-on and diverse the role is. I’ve had the chance to develop a wide range of skills including machining, fabrication, fitting, toolmaking, mechanical overhaul and crane operation. Each of these would be a separate trade in other companies - but here, I’ve been able to gain experience in all of them. That’s largely thanks to the experienced, supportive team who are always willing to help and share their knowledge.

I’ve worked on key systems used by the Royal Navy, including radar repairs and modifications for Type 45 destroyers and built mechanical assemblies for land-based radars. More recently, I’ve been involved in customer site visits, carrying out installation and rectification work. While it’s a practical, manual role, it’s also highly technical and methodical - you’re constantly problem-solving and thinking critically.

There’s also a strong sense of purpose in what we do. Most of the equipment we produce directly supports the safety of Royal Navy ships and personnel. Knowing that my contribution plays a part in something much bigger is a great source of pride.

Being part of a global company like BAE Systems also means huge potential for growth. I’ve already had the chance to work across multiple sites at home and have the opportunity to support overseas installations in the future. The scale of the organisation means your career can grow in any direction.

I originally chose Cowes because it was close to home - I’d visited the Isle of Wight growing up and knew the area. But what I’ve found is a work environment that far outweighs any logistical obstacles. The people, the culture, the training and the work-life balance have made it incredibly rewarding. Whether you're relocating or commuting, you’ll find that what Cowes offers - professionally and personally - is truly worth it.
