Driven by curiosity and community, Lauren built her dream career at BAE Systems in Cowes, Isle of Wight, where cutting-edge innovation meets island life.
Lauren, Project Engineer

I first discovered BAE Systems in high school during an assembly - I was in awe of the technology and innovation. A few years later, I attended an open day at Portsmouth Naval Base and from that moment, I knew I wanted to be part of something bigger.

Growing up on the Isle of Wight, I’d often drive past the Cowes site and wonder what went on behind the gates. That curiosity - and the open day experience - led me to apply for an apprenticeship at BAE Systems. Turning down university for the apprenticeship was a big decision but it’s the best one I’ve ever made.

Since then, my career has really taken off. BAE Systems has supported me every step of the way - from moving into the Radio Frequency Design Team to starting a sponsored part-time degree in Electronic Engineering. Balancing work and study can be tricky but the support here is outstanding. Whether it’s flexible working around exams or opportunities like the University of Oxford led entrepreneurial development programme, the Company continuously invests in my growth.

What sets Cowes apart is the community. The site recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, and it’s filled with passionate, down-to-earth people who are always willing to support early careers. It’s a close-knit environment where you feel part of something special - not just another cog in the machine.
Lauren
Project Engineer, UK

Today, I work in project engineering management, developing future products. I feel empowered and trusted and that makes coming to work genuinely exciting.

And then there's the lifestyle, the Isle of Wight offers the best of both worlds: peaceful countryside and stunning coastline. Within ten minutes of work, I can be walking along Cowes town centre, enjoying a local café or watching the boats go by. Whether it’s summer beach barbecues, mountain biking, tennis or castle walks, there’s so much to explore - and it’s all right on your doorstep.

For those considering relocating, I can honestly say it’s worth it. The pace of life is calmer, the commute is short and the work is meaningful. At BAE Systems, you get the chance to be part of a global business, while living somewhere that truly enhances your quality of life.

BAE Systems is a company where you can be yourself, grow your career and make a real impact - all while enjoying everything the Isle of Wight has to offer.

This is my BAE Systems story, find yours by joining today.
