Relocating for her degree apprenticeship was a big decision- but it’s opened the door to a life-changing career in aerospace.

Choosing a degree apprenticeship at BAE Systems has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It’s given me the chance to earn a degree, gain hands-on experience and work on projects that are shaping the future of aerospace and defence.

Back in sixth form, apprenticeships - especially degree apprenticeships - weren’t really talked about. University seemed like the obvious choice until one conversation with my careers advisor opened my eyes to a different path. I realised I could combine academic learning with real-world experience, and that sounded perfect for me.

Relocating for the role was a big step, but with my parents’ support, I embraced the challenge. It wasn’t easy at first, but the encouragement I received helped me settle in and feel at home.
Since joining, I’ve worked on iconic platforms like Tornado and Hawk, fitting and replacing critical components and bringing engineering drawings to life. Standing beside an aircraft I’ve helped maintain, knowing it plays a vital role in global defence, is an incredible feeling.

Choosing an apprenticeship with BAE Systems wasn’t just a career move; it was life changing. I’ve grown academically, professionally, and personally - all while contributing to projects that shape the future of air technology.

The culture here is welcoming and collaborative. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas and keep learning and that inspires me every day. One highlight was attending DSEI 2025 to showcase the Tempest full-scale replica - a proud moment that showed me how far I’ve come since those early days of sixth form.

Looking ahead, I plan to complete my degree, pursue a master’s, and achieve chartered engineer status. I’d love to work on international projects and inspire others as a STEM role model, showing that anyone can succeed in engineering.
