I graduated with a BE in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Sheffield and started with BAE Systems straight out of university, joining as a graduate electrical engineer.
I’m currently working in the submarine sector. It sounds like a cliché, but I really do learn something new every day. The various technology I get to work with is at the forefront of innovation, and I’ve gained a good understanding of the differing standards of communication and technologies that are only used in submarines, which is fascinating. My favourite thing about the job is that I get to cover such a broad range of work across the electrical engineering department, combining practical work with understanding the theory behind it. I really enjoy working with all the other people in my team – everyone I’ve worked with has always been supportive and on hand to help me if needed.
My work-life balance great. I have a lot of flexibility in my job during the week to pursue my passions outside of work and spend quality time with my family and friends.SamGraduate Electrical Engineer
Inside of work I have a fantastic social life, often taking part in many of the organised social activities with my colleagues. A group of graduates I started with and some of my team also get together after work to play sports. I feel that getting to know my colleagues outside of work has helped improve how we work as a team inside of work.
We’re given lots of responsibility from the get-go - in my first few months, I was given the opportunity to work in different laboratories and on numerous systems. The continued support and reassurance I’ve received has really helped boost my confidence and ensure I can progress and develop in my role at speed.
