Actionable Intelligence
Delivered by Azalea Cluster satellites, the service – known as Azalea RF Mapping – improves the ability to identify illegal and hidden activity and support operations from the vantage of space by detecting and geo-locating radio transmissions for wide-area Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR).
Collecting and analysing space-derived RF data plays a crucial role in tackling today’s evolving and complex threats. When compared to ground-based techniques, RF Mapping from space enables the ability to track RF signals over extremely large distances, including across vast stretches of the ocean. This means we can provide users with next level intelligence, giving them the 360° vision to make informed decisions to help protect the environment, safeguard critical assets and defend the UK and its allies.
The RF Mapping capability uses space-based RF sensors to detect and locate activity in key areas of interest across land and sea. Information collected by the satellites is securely transferred back to Earth and analysed by BAE Systems’ proprietary processing system to provide decision makers with accurate, easy to ingest and multi-layered data.
RFM Azalea Cluster 1 Data
Azalea Cluster 1 comprises four highly resilient satellites which, together, are capable of gathering, analysing and communicating Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and RF signals. BAE Systems is working with Finnish firm, ICEYE, for the advanced SAR technology that forms a key part of Azalea Cluster 1.
Azalea will use its range of sensors to collect radar and radio frequency (RF) data, which will be analysed by on-board machine learning on edge processors to deliver intelligence securely, anywhere in the world while still in orbit.
Azalea cluster 1 is due to launch in 2025.
