I’ve been part of the Azalea™ journey since its earliest sketches on whiteboards, long before metal was cut or the satellites were assembled. To see it now, flying in formation in low Earth orbit, hundreds of kilometres above Earth, is extraordinarily satisfying.
Azalea™ is a multi satellite cluster, with satellites working together as a single, intelligent system. Three of the spacecraft carry advanced radio frequency sensing technology, enabled by the BAE Systems Azalea™ Enhanced Software Defined Radio, and the fourth satellite provides synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capability, allowing us to collect rich, timely data from the Earth’s surface regardless of weather, cloud cover, or time of day. Individually, these sensors are powerful. Together, flying in coordinated formation, they deliver a level of insight that transforms how our customers will be able to understand activity on the ground.
What makes Azalea™ so special?
What makes Azalea™ so special is the speed and clarity with which it completes the “power of perspective” picture. In a world where events unfold rapidly and unpredictably, timely intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance data is essential. Azalea™ is designed to deliver that clarity - helping decision makers act with confidence, backed by precise, multi layered information.
But Azalea™ is also a symbol of something bigger. Space is changing fast. Launch costs are falling, access to orbit is expanding, and more organisations than ever are putting technology above our atmosphere. This shift brings huge opportunity, but also a clear challenge: the UK must stay at the forefront of space innovation if we want to remain competitive and secure in this rapidly evolving domain.
Helping to build UK space capability
That’s why Azalea™ matters. It demonstrates what’s possible when we combine cutting edge engineering with a bold vision for the future. It shows that the UK can design, build, and operate sophisticated space based systems that stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.
As someone who has lived and breathed this programme from the beginning, seeing Azalea™ in orbit is both humbling and energising. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and a glimpse of the extraordinary potential still ahead. The view from space has never been more important, and with Azalea™, we’re helping ensure the UK has the capability it needs to lead from above.
