Industrial control systems, financial systems, freight distribution networks and essential utilities like water, gas, electricity and telecommunications all make up our Critical National Infrastructure. But who protects our Critical National Infrastructure and what are the threats?

Safeguarding Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) security is of paramount importance in the modern digital age. Resilient CNI is crucial to the functioning of any nation, forming the backbone of essential services that societies rely upon to function smoothly day-to-day.

However, despite our growing dependence on these services and the ever increasing digitalisation of how they operate, the growing risk of the services, processes and resources that make up our CNI being significantly impacted by cyber-attacks is often overlooked or taken for granted.

The Cyber Impact
The Cyber Impact

At BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, we recognise the importance of protecting CNI against the latest and most sophisticated physical security and cyber threats. Working with diverse CNI sectors ranging from energy providers and utilities companies to transport infrastructure and telecommunications for over three decades, we have vast experience of providing comprehensive security solutions tailored specifically for CNI systems and infrastructures.

For customers who need support in mastering areas where they do not possess sufficient internal expertise, we offer an extensive catalogue of solutions and capabilities that augment existing cyber defence measures. Our cyber security services help you mitigate vulnerabilities and optimise the security measures implemented to protect these essential sectors effectively – ensuring the upmost resilience and assurance.

Our security specialists understand both the threat landscape CNI organisations face and the sector specific challenges within which they operate. Key challenges include:

  • Protecting against the threat of ransomware attacks, particularly those that have the potential to take critical operational technology (OT) systems offline and impact the CNI services on which we all depend. Even when the underlying OT systems may be segregated, monitoring systems which are essential in maintaining operational stability and allowing incidents to be fixed before they become issues impacting service availability, can often be more readily impacted by ransomware.
  • Maintaining customer trust and ensuring the security of customer personal and financial data. CNI firms often hold significant quantities of customer personal data that is an attractive target to cyber criminals. The need to protect this information is even more acute given many firms often hold information on vulnerable customers through their role in providing essential services.
  • Modernising legacy IT and OT systems, which includes seeking to obtain the benefits of delivering services from cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services. This remains an ongoing priority for many CNI organisations and is a challenge for those that need to maintain segregation of the critical OT systems used to deliver CNI services but increasingly rely on cloud services, or SAAS service providers, in delivering those OT systems in today’s digital age.
