James Cook University STEM event
Our team of engineers assisted JCU with a recent STEM event for 50 students from across several Cairns High Schools.
The students completed several engineering based activities including programming a soil moisture monitor connected to the cloud, and engineering the appropriate sized parachute to release an egg from a two storey height to land without breaking.
The team was led by the Hydrographic In-Service Support (HISS) Project Engineering Manager Drew and included Brian (Engineering Team Lead), Nastassja (Engineering Task Lead), James (Configuration Management Officer), Matt (Engineering Task Lead) and Yuval (Engineering Task Lead).
The team also represented the local Engineers Australia group with several members of the team severing as local EA committee members.
Cairns Youth and Career Expo
The engineering team also supported the Cairns Youth and Career Expo for the third year which saw almost 5000 students from across Cairns and the Tablelands attend throughout the day.
The event has grown over the past three years and now showcases most industries, tertiary education providers and career services to local Year 10 to 12 students.
The BAE Systems team represent our company as well as Engineers Australia and feature Drew, Brian, Nastassja, Matt, Yuval and interns Jordan and Ezra.
Engineers Australia Northern Regional Forum
Engineers Australia hosts the Northern Regional Forum in QLD annually rotating the location each year between Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.
The event was sponsored by 12 firms, with the premium sponsor BAE Systems Australia. There were 12 key note speakers covering topics all connected to the theme of this year’s event Rainforest, Reef and Resilience.
BAE Systems Australia Managing Director – Maritime, Craig Lockhart, attended as a keynote speaker for BAE Systems Australia and presented on the topic of ‘resilience’ within the context of the maritime defence perspective. This industry was particularly well represented at the forum – the audience included many BAE Systems subcontractors, government employees and other maritime primes.
More than 25 members of the Cairns BAE Systems Australia team attended the all-day event, contributing to the new record of 125 participants at the event.
The Cairns team are well represented within the local Engineers Australia community. It is an active group that maintains a monthly professional development program and an annual awards and gala event at the end of each year.
