While such a strong statistic would suggest focused investment into solutions that enable intuitive and proactive defence as part of a more collaborative ecosystem, the reality is somewhat different.

The acknowledgement of various solutions’ attributes is yet to blossom into a connected network of vital, reliable data that would keep those on the frontline safe. Investments into new defence technologies are certainly occurring, but once brought in, the enablers are not being developed to extract their full potential – resulting in a significant gap between initial adoption to full levels of implementation.

This is true for a range of complex, next-generation technologies including AI and quantum computing, cyber and even space. As Pavandeep Bhogal, Head of Product Engineering at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, poses: “The most prominent tech trends we’re currently seeing in defence are related to autonomy, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and hypersonics.”

So, how can defence plug the gap?

Multi-domain integration (MDI) – which is seen as mission critical by 98% of defence leaders – offers a solution. As an enveloping model, MDI can:

  • Promote quicker and more effective integration of new and developing technologies
  • Provide assurance that those new solutions are robust and fit for purpose
  • Enable compatibility and interoperability between different systems and platforms
  • Support ongoing R&D to ensure that militaries are constantly ahead of the digital curve

In our latest report, we analyse why defence technologies remain stuck in the pilot phase and discuss how MDI can help make a real difference in the future battlespace.
