In volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, decision makers need the clarity that comes from insight and the confidence from better understanding of how strategies and hypotheses are likely to perform when tested against the adverse conditions of the real world.
Our analysis-led wargaming gives organisations across Defence and Government exactly that: a safe, structured way to explore challenges and concepts, reveal risks and test plans. This enables better, faster and more assured decision-making.
Applicable to the tactical, operational and strategic levels of command, our approach blends rigorous analytical methodology and real-time assurance through the wargaming lifecycle with modern technology and deep Defence expertise. This lets us accelerate the delivery of wargaming that is robust, credible and operationally relevant.

Our proven wargaming framework ensures that every wargame delivers credible evidence
We use technology-based tools to immerse participants in the scenario and accelerate delivery
Our extensive military and defence expertise ensures precise and realistic scenarios
We provide a spectrum of wargaming approaches, designed to match the maturity of customers’ question and the depth of insight required. These three pillars can stand alone or work together as part of an integrated decision advantage activity:
- Adversarial Wargame: Gain an understanding of a problem or question set through a scenario-based, adversarial activity in which the outcomes and sequence of events affect, and are affected by, the decisions made by the participants.
- Table Top Exercise: Gain an understanding of a problem or question set by using a scenario to explore whether a concept, plan or capability is fit for purpose. Ideal for clarifying options and stress testing assumptions in a structured environment. A tabletop exercise may define a hypothesis to test in an adversarial wargame.
- Facilitated Discussion: Explore a problem or question set via focused, facilitated discussions with stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts. Perfect for shaping early thinking, defining problems or rapidly gathering expert judgement. A Facilitated Discussion may be the precursor to a Table Top Exercise.
Defence Experimentation and Wargaming Hub (DEWH)
Cyber and Specialist Operations Command’s (CSOC) DEWH was established in 2024. The ‘whole force partnership’ consists of uniformed leadership and a uniformed component, a Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) component and an industry component.
DEWH, which operates in blended teams, is mandated to provide a wargaming service and enhance wargaming capacity and capability across UK Defence.
Key to DEWH’s success is employment of the Analysis-Led Wargaming Framework (ALWF). This ensures that every phase of a wargaming task lifecycle is truly analysis-led and provided with real-time assurance – enabling better decisions to be made faster and with greater confidence. The ALWF was originally conceived by our wargaming team at BAE Systems Techmodal. It has been proven and evolved at DEWH through collaboration with Dstl and is intended to become the new UK defence standard.
As the lead for industry’s ‘Core Wargaming Services’ (CWS) component of DEWH, Techmodal is responsible for:
- Collaborating and leading the design and delivery of wargaming activity
- Developing wargaming best practice in collaboration with Dstl
- Collaborating with Dstl to further evolve the ALWF and to research technology-based tools and aids
- Reaching into the ASTRID supply chain
