In 2025, we launched an onsite aircraft worker program. It aimed to deliver a fast, efficient workforce solution to meet critical operational needs and maintain a pipeline of certified talent for the F-35 Depot.
The Aircraft Maintenance Worker Program was officially launched in October 2024, with more than 50 interested candidates. A final group of 12 were selected to begin training in April.
The apprentices have completed eight core units of competency from the aeroskills stream within Certificate IV (Aeroskills), using a combination of theory delivered remotely in Williamtown and two trips to Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Wagga for practical training.
These competencies include work health and safety, aviation maintenance work activities and standards, manuals and documentation, basic hand skills, aircraft flight servicing, aircraft marshalling, and environmental management systems.
The structure of Aircraft Maintenance Worker certification provides an alternative pathway to completing a Certificate IV (Aeroskills), and is delivered in partnership with the Commonwealth of Australia and BAE Systems’ Aviation Technical Training team in Wagga.
This program provides an effective solution for the F-35 Depot to meet its maintenance requirements for the Company in the short term.
Importantly, it helps build a pipeline of potential apprentices and future tradespeople with job ready, technically capable personnel for the future needs of the Depot, such as growing maintenance requirements.
The development of this course is an excellent example of our strong working relationship with Defence and the RAAF, with all parties striving to enhance workforce and operational effectiveness.
