Jim's career demonstrates how transferable skills can open new opportunities. After building experience across multiple engineering disciplines, he moved into Space and is now helping grow BAE Systems' capability as an Engineering Manager. His journey shows how experience gained in one area can create opportunities in another.

Building a career across engineering and Space

I've spent more than 20 years working at BAE Systems across multiple sites, programmes and engineering disciplines.

My career began in Systems Engineering, supporting a variety of Air and Information Systems projects. Along the way, I've worked with talented teams across the UK and internationally, including spending time supporting Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight trials in the Australian outback.

For much of my career, Space felt like something that was slightly out of reach. I've always been fascinated by the industry, but it wasn't until 2018 that an opportunity arose to join a Space project elsewhere in the business.

I leapt at the chance. Over the following years, I worked on several early-stage Space programmes before proudly watching three brand new BAE Systems satellites including our own innovative payloads launch.

One of the things I've valued most throughout my career is the ability to move between business areas and projects, continuously learning and developing new skills.

Creating the foundations for success

Today, I work as an Engineering Manager within BAE Systems Digital Intelligence's Space business. My role is focused less on the technology itself and more on creating the environment that enables engineering teams to perform at their best.

From supporting project reviews and improving ways of working to managing information, documentation and programme delivery, much of my role centres on helping teams overcome obstacles and focus on what they do best. As programmes progress from concept through development, testing and delivery, the role evolves alongside the needs of the team.

One of the most rewarding aspects is helping create the conditions that allow talented engineers to solve problems, innovate and deliver great work.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is helping create an environment where talented engineers can do their best work and deliver innovative Space programmes together.

Inspired by what's possible

I've always been fascinated by Space exploration. One of the moments that had the biggest impact on me was standing beneath the Saturn V rocket at the Kennedy Space Center during my university years. Seeing the scale of the engineering achievement behind the Apollo programme reinforced just how much can be accomplished when talented people unite behind a common goal.

That sense of possibility continues to inspire me today. Whether it's developing innovative technologies, solving complex engineering problems or helping shape future capabilities, Space remains one of the most exciting sectors to work in.

A future in Space

Space plays an increasingly important role in everyday life, national security and global communications. It enables organisations to connect, communicate and make choices using information gathered from across the globe. As technology continues to evolve, the opportunities within the sector across a wide range of exciting technologies will continue to expand.

Through continued investment and innovation, BAE Systems has an opportunity to play a significant role in that future. With the sector growing rapidly, there has never been a better time for anyone considering a career in Space to get involved and start applying their skills to this critical domain.
