BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK

Modern defence, security and public safety operations are increasingly distributed, dynamic and information rich. Personnel must coordinate across multiple teams, platforms, domains and locations – often in rapidly changing operational environments where timely decisions are critical to mission success.

At a time when the need for digitally connected operations has never been greater, achieving operational advantage is dependent on the ability to rapidly collect, share and act upon information collated from a complex landscape of disconnected systems, isolated data sources and fragmented communication channels.

TAK (Team Awareness Kit) is a proven situational awareness platform that helps the defence, security and public safety communities meet today’s challenges. It enables users to share information, coordinate activity and maintain a common operational picture in real time.

Leveraging our extensive operational experience and TAK engineering expertise, we help organisations around the world to deploy and exploit TAK at pace through wide ranging TAK services within an open architecture, reducing risk and accelerating operational advantage.

Introducing Unified Operational Awareness

While TAK provides a powerful situational awareness capability, its operational potential cannot be realised if deployed alone. BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness is our integrated approach to delivering a complete ecosystem built around TAK, with ATAK serving as the primary user interface at the tactical edge, transforming it from a technology platform into an effective operational situational awareness capability.

It combines TAK with secure hosting, mission services, systems and sensor integration, bespoke plugin development, training and support to deliver a mission-ready situational awareness capability. Rather than relying on multiple disconnected technologies and suppliers, organisations benefit from a unified solution designed to connect people, platforms, sensors and information sources within a shared operational environment.

Our services span the full capability lifecycle

BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK FAQS

BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK is an integrated situational awareness capability that enables organisations to share information, maintain a common operational picture, communicate effectively and coordinate activities in real time. Combining TAK-centric hosting, development, integration, training and support services, it helps organisations rapidly establish a mission-ready situational awareness capability and customise it to their operational needs.

Key benefits include enhanced situational awareness, improved information sharing, faster operational decision-making, greater interoperability, stronger multi-agency coordination and a scalable, future-ready capability that can evolve alongside operational requirements.

Situational awareness is the ability to understand, monitor and respond to events within an operational environment. BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK helps organisations maintain real-time visibility of people, assets and activities, supporting faster decision-making and more effective operational outcomes.

The tactical edge is where information is collected, decisions are made, and actions are executed during an operation, often in communications-constrained and contested conditions. BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK helps deliver timely operational information and powerful capability to support confident decision-making and take effect action at the tactical edge.

A common operational picture (COP) is a shared view of operational information, assets and events that enables teams to work from the same understanding of a situation. BAE Systems Unified Operational Awareness powered by TAK helps create and maintain a trusted COP across teams, organisations and operational domains.

TAK (Team Awareness Kit) is a geospatial situational awareness ecosystem that enables teams to share location data, operational information, alerts, and mission updates in real time. It provides a common operational picture that helps military units, government organisations, security teams, and emergency responders coordinate activities more effectively during missions and incidents.

ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit) is the Android-based client application within the TAK ecosystem. It allows users to view maps, track friendly forces, share locations, exchange messages, manage mission data, and integrate intelligence feeds from sensors, drones, and other connected systems. ATAK is widely used across defence, public safety, and security operations because of its flexibility and extensive plugin ecosystem.

TAK Server is the central communications and data management platform that connects TAK users, systems, and devices. It securely distributes operational data between clients, manages authentication, controls access permissions, and enables the sharing of maps, mission packages, chat messages, sensor feeds, and location updates across an organisation.

TAK Server Federation is the process of linking multiple TAK Servers together so they can exchange selected operational data. Federation allows military organisations, allied forces, government agencies, or partner organisations to collaborate while maintaining control over their own infrastructure and security policies. This capability supports multi-domain and coalition operations where situational awareness must be shared across different networks.

A TAK plugin is an extension that adds specialised functionality to the platform. Plugins can integrate new data sources, enhance mapping capabilities, connect external systems, display custom intelligence products, support specific mission workflows, or enable control of connected assets such as sensors and unmanned systems. Plugins allow organisations to tailor TAK to their operational requirements. An ATAK Plugin is one specific for the Android TAK client application.

Sensors can be integrated with TAK through open standards, TAK plugins, and middleware applications. A common approach is to convert third-party sensor data into Cursor on Target (CoT) messages. This enables data from a wide range of devices, including ground sensors, cameras, and environmental monitoring systems, to be displayed directly within the TAK operational picture. It can also enable TAK applications to configure, manage, and control connected sensors.

Drone integration typically involves connecting the unmanned aircraft system (UAS) to TAK through existing plugins or configured data streams. This allows operators to view drone locations, telemetry, video streams, flight paths, and target information within the TAK environment. Many commercial, government, and military drone platforms can be integrated to enhance reconnaissance, surveillance, and operational awareness capabilities.

ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) feeds can be integrated by connecting video management systems, intelligence platforms, sensors, and command-and-control systems to TAK. Information can be shared through CoT messaging, video streaming protocols,  or middleware solutions, enabling intelligence data to be visualised alongside friendly force tracking and operational information in a single interface.

The primary difference is the device or platform they are designed to support:

  • ATAK: Android application for smartphones, tablets, and ruggedised devices.
  • WinTAK: Windows desktop application designed for command centres, operations rooms, and Laptops.
  • iTAK: iOS version for iPhones and iPads.
  • WebTAK: Browser-based interface that enables access to TAK data through a web application without installing a dedicated client.

All versions connect to the same TAK ecosystem and provide a common operational picture, although available features may vary depending on the platform. ATAK is considered the most feature rich, with the widest plugin support.

TAK is used by a wide range of organisations, including:

  • Military and defence forces
  • Government agencies
  • Law enforcement organisations
  • Emergency services and first responders
  • Fire and rescue services
  • Search and rescue teams
  • Humanitarian and disaster response organisations
  • Commercial and civilian users
