As a Project Manager on the JORN Sustainment team, a member of BAE Systems Australia’s ‘Embrace Employee Resource Group (ERG) for Diversity and Culture’, and with a passion for Venezuelan dancing, Bianca has seen firsthand the power of diverse perspectives in driving innovation.
Bianca’s journey from Venezuela to Australia, and from the oil and gas industry and manufacturing into defence, has shaped her belief in the importance of inclusion and support networks in traditionally male-dominated fields.
“Joining Embrace ERG last year stemmed from my belief in the importance of inclusive representation.
"Being part of a community that values diversity has broadened my perspective and helped me grow personally and professionally.”Bianca
A journey of resilience and opportunity
Bianca’s path to defence wasn’t a traditional one. After moving to Australia in 2013, she faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture, language, and work environment.
Her transition from oil and gas to manufacturing happened through an unexpected moment of support—a woman in her network who, upon hearing of her job search, connected her with an opportunity in manufacturing sector. This connection ultimately became the stepping stone that led her into the defence industry.
“This single act of support was a turning point. Her encouragement and recommendation helped me transition, first as a Project Engineer and later as a Project Manager, where I could embrace the operational aspects of my work and focus on delivery.”
This experience reinforced Bianca’s belief in the power of mentorship and professional networks, particularly for women looking to break into new industries.
Despite her success, Bianca has encountered challenges familiar to many women in defence. She has faced moments where her voice wasn’t taken seriously or felt excluded from key opportunities.
Instead of letting these moments discourage her, she used them as motivation to refine her communication skills and assert herself.
“My journey of continuous learning and striving to be heard continues. My advice to other women facing similar hurdles is to ‘keep learning and improving.’
"Don’t let criticism about your accent, word choice, or communication style shake your confidence — seek mentors, use available tools, and consider coaching to strengthen your skills.”
Persistence and self-development have been central to Bianca’s career growth, and she encourages others to embrace challenges as opportunities for learning.
Looking ahead: The future of women in defence
Bianca has witnessed positive changes in recent years, with a growing effort to increase female representation in defence roles. She notes that such opportunities were nearly impossible to access seven or eight years ago, but progress is happening.
“I hope to see more women from other industries being taken seriously in defence.
"Cross-industry experience brings valuable perspectives that drive innovation, and creating pathways for career transitioners is key to a more inclusive and dynamic sector.”Bianca
As she continues to move forward in her career, Bianca remains committed to supporting other women, championing diversity, and ensuring that progress isn’t just about numbers but about real, lasting change.
This International Women’s Day, her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the impact of mentorship, and the importance of lifting others as we march forward together.
