In 2020, 18 high school students joined the program across two intakes in steelwork, mechanical, electrical, and technical trades – vital trades that ensure the multi-decade program has the right depth of skilled workers.
We are recognising 22 apprentices – including ten from the original cohort – who have completed their training and are part of the 2,300-strong workforce now working on the program.
BAE Systems Australia is proud to welcome our first graduating cohort of apprentices. This program is creating thousands of Australian jobs while building national security and resilience.
The benefit of our apprenticeship program is clear… you will build technical and workplace skills, secure a competitive salary and be ready for lifelong and future-proof career opportunities across the defence industry.
Georgette Elston, Head of Resourcing and Early Careers at BAE Systems Australia
This group includes the following:
- 18 steelwork tradespeople
- Two piping tradespeople
- One electrical tradesperson
- One detailed design tradesperson
- Of these, two school-based apprentices who began in 2021
- Of these, nine who commenced a Certificate III in Fabrication in 2022; they were already working as welders but did not have the formal qualification
For the graduating cohort, the experience has been transformative. They speak about the technical skills they’ve learned, the friendships they’ve built, and the confidence they’ve gained.
“It’s definitely been challenging, but very rewarding,” says Izzy, who completed a Certificate III in Fabrication as a school-based apprentice and has since moved into Quality Control to become a welding inspector.
“I feel like a completely different person. I was so timid at the start but I’m not afraid to make conversation anymore”.
The pioneering cohort has completed their formal qualifications and secured full-time roles at the shipyard, opening clear pathways for future development.
“It’s endless opportunities really, I want to stay here for a while, learn from the tradesmen and hopefully stay for a little while longer,” says John, who began as a school-based apprentice.
The Hunter Class Frigate Program is creating thousands of jobs and upskilling Australians in high-value, sustainable careers.
Across all cohorts, there are 105 apprentices, including 47 new starters in 2025.
The achievements of the graduating cohort underscore that the Hunter Class Frigate Program is delivering more than ships – it’s building capability, strength, jobs, and national confidence for generations to come.
