Sensors and processing R&D

Serving the warfighter on every domain with innovative sensors and transitioning these technologies on multiple DoD platforms.
We innovate sensors that collect radio-frequency, electro-optic, and acoustic signals from across the electromagnetic spectrum and underwater to support a range of mission needs. We also develop adaptive, intelligent processing technologies to deal with the massive volume of sensor data to provide situational awareness, positioning, communications, counter-measures, targeting, and more agile response options.
 
This R&D area combines advanced, multispectral sensor technologies with algorithms for signal processing and machine learning, and develops new processing architectures tailored to the unique challenges of low SWaP for real-time environments.

Next-generation small, affordable multi-mode sensors and seekers support smart munitions for optical identification in denied environments. These smart munitions have the capability to engage a diverse target set in all weather and environmental conditions. 

R&D capabilities include the following sensors that can be optimized to meet mission-specific needs:
  • Military-hardened sensors
  • Infrared (IR) and RF technology multi-wavelength seekers 
  • Multi-modal sensors
  • Programmable sensors
  • Radio frequency, electro-optic sensors
  • Acoustic sensors

 

Signal detection, estimation, and parameter measurement

Developed sensors provide heightened situational awareness to military systems that enable intelligence situation assessment, and targeting and targeting. They provide critical information to generate responses and elicit game-changing effects in the battlefield.
 
R&D capabilities include algorithms to find, measure, and exploit signals from acoustic, radar, communications, navigation, and optical sources. They also have the capability to identify the sources of signals.
 

Adaptive and cognitive signal processing

Sensors and processing R&D equips communications and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems and other adaptive decision logic and action capabilities in unknown, dynamic, and challenging threat environments.
 
R&D capabilities include:
  • Spectrum mapping and threat behavior characterization for radar and communications
  • Operation against agile and unknown threats 
  • Real-time response optimization for electronic support, electronic attack, and electronic protection 
  • Operation in cluttered environments 
  • Advanced EW techniques
 

Laser radar

Power- and volume-efficient radar-type measurements are provided with a low probability of interception and detection. This enables the warfighter to remain nearly untraceable – instilling the confidence to take adversaries head on.
 
R&D laser based systems with adaptable, programmable, active include programmable, adaptive, and active optical measurement systems to gain access to information that is not traditionally measured.
