Congressman Tonko greets an employee during his Endicott, N.Y., facility visit

HybriDrive Solutions has been developing hybrid electric propulsion transport solutions with better fuel savings and decreased emissions for 20 years. Congressman Tonko is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and former president of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). BAE Systems has collaborated with NYSERDA on several hybrid propulsion projects in the past.

HDS General Manager Steve Trichka co-hosted Congressman Tonko with John Hroncich, strategy and market development manager, HDS. During the visit, the Congressman received a briefing on BAE Systems and its HybriDrive® propulsion system technology.  He also toured the new HDS facility, which opened in December 2012 following a devastating flood that destroyed BAE Systems’ Johnson City, N.Y. location in September 2011.

In December 2012, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that BAE Systems will receive $2.1 million in funds to further invest in its hybrid-electric technology. The Company’s proposal was one of 62 submitted by the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council. Hroncich created and submitted BAE Systems’ funding proposal aimed at improving the HybriDrive propulsion product line, creating new demonstration vehicles, and building upon the business’ relationship with Binghamton University.

“The HybriDrive team appreciates Congressman Tonko’s interest in our hybrid products and is eager to bring more thought leaders and policymakers in to see our technology,” said Hroncich. “We are enthusiastic about working with legislators and organizations to further our endeavors in clean energy innovation.”

During his visit, Congressman Tonko also rode on a HybriDrive Series-E demonstration bus and expressed his interest in supporting upstate New York’s technology growth and innovation.  The demonstration bus is fitted with HybriDrive Solutions’ most innovative hybrid electric technology, HybriDrive Series-E propulsion, which provides more electric capability than any other hybrid electric propulsion system for today’s transit market.
