Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing 

The EMC test facility is housed in a purpose-built building alongside an environmental test facility which enables efficient delivery of customer test programmes. BAE Systems in Rochester is a Ministry of Defence approved facility, providing a secure test environment.

With three large anechoic chambers and interconnecting shielded rooms, the Faraday Test Centre is able to support a wide range of products and complex test requirements.

The large chambers are calibrated to meet the DEF-STAN 59-411 requirements and all offer air-conditioning, fire protection, multiple power sources and penetration panels.

Our team provides product verification and validation as required by BAE Systems as well as confidential test requirements of external customers.

We can provide test coverage for military, aerospace and commercial requirements. The laboratory can perform emissions and susceptibility tests up to 40GHz, pulse modulated susceptibility tests up to 2000 v/m, power input tests and transient tests.

We ensure that we remain up to date with the requirements of the test standards on our UKAS accreditation, to support test programmes covering:

• Rotary-wing aircraft
• Commercial avionics
• Line replaceable unit (LRU) testing for air, land, and sea-based platforms.

Our testing chambers accommodate a 6m test bench setup and have a wide range of power supplies available which can replicate military and aerospace supplies.

Test specifications:

• Radio frequency radiated immunity: CW up to 700 V/m / pulse modulation up to 2,000 V/m. Frequencies tested from 10 kHz up to 40 GHz
• Transient immunity: MIL STD-461 CS115 & CS116 / RTCA DO160 Section 17, Section 19 / DEF STAN 59-411 DCS04, DCS05, DCS06, DCS08 / Eurofighter Typhoon specification SPE-J-000-E-1000 / NEMP - conducted >40A and 4kV for damped sinusoids with both fixed and variable frequencies
• Power supply tests: Power line - 3 phase, single phase, or DC variation / RTCA DO160, MIL STD-704 and other standards available
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) testing: ESD - up to 30kv for air and contact discharge
• Magnetic effect: RTCA DO160 Section 15 / MIL STD-461 RS101 / DEF STAN 59-411 DRS01
• Audio frequency tests: RTCA DO160 Section 18 / MIL STD-461 CS101 / DEF STAN 59-411 DCS01
