The equipment is a high-tech helmet system which projects data in front of the pilot’s eye allowing instant assessment of points of interest.  The technology can save vital seconds during military operations.

The request to develop the Tornado Helmet Mounted Cueing System (HMCS) the RAF's Tornado GR4 fleet was received in April last year. Within months, engineers and technicians at BAE Systems had integrated the system onto the aircraft and it is now operational on the Tornado in Afghanistan.

Wing Commander Kurt Hill, FAST Tornado Capability Manager said: "The Tornado HMCS capability has greatly enhanced the crews’ situational awareness and resource management, enabling the rapid identification of points of interest in the homogeneous Afghan environment”.

Martin Taylor, BAE Systems’ Combat Air Support Director said:  “We are delighted with the positive feedback from the RAF crews who have used the HMCS on Tornado in Afghanistan.  The speed at which the system was developed and deployed demonstrates our ability to respond effectively to customer requirements.  Over the coming months, we will continue to work with the customer, to provide the capability across the wider Tornado fleet.”

Notes to Editors

  • BAE Systems is a world leader in helmet-mounted display and targeting systems, a position gained through continuous investment in HMD technology and innovation. Through the company’s Electronic Systems’ operations in Rochester, Kent, it is leading the development and manufacture of helmet-mounted display (HMD) and targeting systems.
  • With more than 30 years of exposure to the HMD market, BAE Systems has acquired a world class reputation in the design and development of helmet-mounted night vision systems, helmet-mounted sighting systems, (HMSS) monocular and binocular displays in addition to fully integrated high performance HMD products. The team of HMD experts have developed a comprehensive understanding of the demanding environment in which the equipment is used to adopt best practices from rapid prototyping through to full life cycle management to ensure the right display solution is available in terms of affordability and timing. The team has developed a pilot centred approach to the development of advanced HMD systems, accounting for human factors, protection, life support and the electro-optics sub-system design.
  • BAE Systems provides a range of innovative display products including ‘Q-SIGHT™’ monocular helmets, ‘Striker’ binocular visor-projected helmets and digital HUDs
