Students from Cardinal Newman College gain experience and knowledge of the world of work

Twenty four sixth-form students from Cardinal Newman College and Blackburn College recently spent two weeks at our Warton and Samlesbury sites on work experience.

Aimed at helping young people in selecting future career choices, work experience is a great opportunity for students to gain real experience and knowledge of the workplace. The students spent time working in a number of areas across the business including Engineering, Project Management, Procurement and the Legal Department

For many years the Company has supported work experience activities on an ad hoc basis aimed at students prior to taking their GCSEs. In 2011 MAI introduced a more structured approach with the allocation of hosts being made by the Education Partnerships team.

During 2011 the Government recommended that work experience should now be given to students aged 16-19 and to support this, MAI introduced an additional four work experience cohorts. Blackpool & Fylde College and sixth-form students from the Company’s partnership schools will also participate in work experience activities at Warton and Samlesbury during the first half of 2013. Feedback from this year’s participants, both college and hosting department, will help determine an approach for work experience across the whole of MAI.
