What is a helmet-mounted display?

A helmet-mounted display, or HMD system, is a see-through display that is projected directly in front of the pilot’s eyes. It substantially improves a pilot’s situational awareness by projecting real-time, critical information onto the visor, augmenting their view of the outside world.

Built on decades of experience

The Striker II digital HMD builds on decades of combat-proven performance and experience from the original Striker HMD, used on the Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab JAS 39 Gripen aircraft.

Striker II gives pilots fully immersive, eyes out, 360-degree situational awareness. It is the only flight proven HMD in the world to combine a 40-degree field-of-view, daylight readable colour display and integrated night vision, using patented next generation technology.

The digital high-resolution system supports today’s operational needs and is architected to support future missions such as live virtual constructive training and Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) cueing.

The benefits of Striker II include:

  • Integrated night vision: with seamless day-to-night capability, our integrated camera will process and project onto the inside of the helmet’s visor, showing pilots a digital image, in real time.
  • Colour symbology: its ability to display colours greatly reduces a pilot’s workload. In a combat situation, instantly seeing an adversary in red symbology, and friendlies in blue, can be critical to mission success.
  • Near zero latency tracking system: Striker II’s combat-proven tracking system keeps the pilot’s exact head position in sync with the aircraft’s computer system, meaning symbology can be projected onto the visor with perfect alignment with the real world.
  • Picture-in-picture technology: whether pilots are closing in on a target or surveying an area of interest, Striker II supports picture-in-picture technology. Imagery can be displayed in a small offset window, separate from the main display, readable but out of the way of essential flight information. Striker II can also simulate adversaries in training.
  • Optimised for pilot comfort and protection: Striker II offers a better balance and centre of gravity, increasing pilot comfort during high G-level manoeuvres on fixed-wing platforms and greatly reducing neck loads for extended operations.

Easy, platform-agnostic integration

Striker II has been specifically designed to enable easy integration across a wide range of platforms including aircraft with analogue or digital display drives.

BAE Systems can provide a complete HMD system solution using Striker II or work with customers to integrate Striker II into existing aircraft architectures. It is also designed to work with various crew escape systems and ejection seats.
