Lars began his journey into engineering after completing a master’s degree in physics, discovering a role where he could apply his strengths, grow with purpose and contribute to work that protects real-world capability.

When I was finishing my master’s in physics, I knew I wanted to begin my career somewhere that felt empowering - a place where I could stretch my abilities, continue learning and feel connected to meaningful work. A friend recommended BAE Systems and the moment I explored the opportunity within the mathematical modelling team, something clicked. My skills aligned with work that would shape future technology and it felt like the right place to start my journey.

Since joining as an Associate Systems Engineer, I’ve found exactly what I was looking for: supportive colleagues, a culture that genuinely values development and space to grow both personally and professionally. I’ve been encouraged to build confidence in areas that were new to me, guided through training that strengthened my coding and engineering capabilities and trusted with responsibilities that helped me find my voice early in my career.

Relocating for my role was a big change. I had lived near my family and long-time friends for more than a decade and stepping away from that support network was daunting but the welcome I received at BAE Systems made all the difference. My team took the time to help me settle in, encouraged me when I doubted myself and created an environment where I felt included, appreciated and safe to ask questions. Their support helped me overcome the worry of being less experienced than those around me. Instead of feeling out of place, I felt understood and encouraged to grow at my own pace.

Today I’m working on research and development projects for future Royal Navy platforms work that protects people across the armed forces and the communities they serve. Contributing to something with such real world impact has given me purpose, motivation and a sense of pride I carry every day.

Outside of work, the social community has been just as important. From Friday get-togethers to weekend badminton and even the occasional bingo defeat, forming friendships came naturally. Those moments of connection helped my new environment feel like home.

Feeling trusted to pioneer new ideas while being supported to protect what matters most has made this experience inspiring and fulfilling.
