Ensuring a nation’s workforce have the necessary technical skills is not just about economic benefits; it is also about securing a nation's place in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The UK combat air industry has a long history of deep commitment to fostering skills, training, and opportunities for apprentices and graduates, ensuring a robust pipeline of talent for the future.

Through initiatives like apprenticeship programmes, graduate schemes, and partnerships with leading educational institutions, we invest heavily in the development of our current and future workforce and the wider eco-system.

Maintaining long-term skills in the UK combat air sector, exemplified by programmes like HawkTyphoon, and Tempest, is crucial for both national defence and economic prosperity.

For many years the Hawk advanced jet trainer has been instrumental in training first year craft/engineering apprentices as well as pilots, while the Typhoon fighter jet demonstrates the UK's prowess in producing world-class combat aircraft and advancing skills at the highest end. These programmes not only ensure our military personnel and equipment remains at the forefront of innovation, but the development and maintenance of the equipment also sustains a highly skilled workforce that drives that innovation right across the UK.

The development of Tempest is a testament to the UK’s commitment to staying ahead in aerospace technology. This programme and the advanced digital architecture it will demand is set to revolutionise the skills needed to develop  advancements in stealth, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems.

Whether our teams are providing round-the-clock support to the Royal Air Force at air bases across the UK, or working on the development of the UK's first crewed flying demonstrator for 40 years, our programmes provide hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, emphasising continuous learning and professional development over many decades.

At BAE Systems, we're looking ahead to what comes after next, to anticipate skills demanded by future programmes.

As technology rapidly evolves, we're focusing on digital advancements to improve design and manufacturing, which means we'll need experts in data science, AI, advanced systems engineering, and great communicators. We're excited about the creativity and ambition of people who love technology and solving problems, and by fostering inclusive and flexible work environments, we believe we can help our employees thrive and keep the UK competitive in the digital revolution.

Together, these roles form a cohesive workforce that drives innovation and maintains the UK's leadership in combat air technology on the global stage.

By cultivating a highly skilled and adaptable workforce, we and our sector partners demonstrate our dedication to maintaining technological leadership and supporting the broader national strategy for economic growth and innovation.
