Each February, Engineers Week or EWeek, celebrates engineers, their vital role in shaping our world, and inspiring the next generation of bright minds to enter the field. Many students lack consistent access to enriching STEM experiences outside of school, limiting their opportunities. BAE Systems is helping bridge that gap, cultivating a passion for STEM by meeting students where they are and inspiring them to see themselves as future innovators.
During EWeek this year, our employees brought hands-on STEM experiences directly to students through classrooms visits and after-school programs across the country. By engaging students with interactive activities, providing real-world examples and sharing their career journeys, our engineers demonstrated the exciting possibilities of engineering.
These efforts are part of BAE Systems’ year-round commitment to expanding access to STEM education through grants and volunteerism. Our employees complement classroom learning by mentoring students, supporting robotics teams, and participating in career readiness programs. EWeek amplifies these ongoing efforts and celebrates the dedication of our volunteers.
Students can feel the impact of working directly with our volunteers in person. This model gives them a chance to learn from engineers in the field and makes a career in STEM feel attainable to the next generation.
“I hope that each event I support leaves at least one person with something that will help them grow in a way they didn’t consider or had uncertainty about,” said Rob Sanroma, an engineer in BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems sector.
The ripple effects of this work extend far beyond EWeek. For many students, getting to work side-by-side with a real engineer sparks a lifelong passion for STEM.
“For our employees, volunteering fosters a sense of purpose, strengthens their connection to the community, and helps build an engineering workforce that’s ready to take on the challenges of the future,” said Allan McQuarrie, vice president of engineering for BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems sector.
