Our Maritime Sensing R&D unit develops new sensors, processing payloads, and systems that support warfighters by leveraging the ocean environment to execute missions.
Supporting naval strategies for countering adversarial capabilities

Research and development of Maritime Sensing technologies at BAE Systems is focused primarily on innovative solutions that reinforce U.S. naval strategies. These solutions are to counter growing capabilities of potential adversaries, so as to maintain dominance in contested areas, and to continue expansion of remote manned and unmanned mission system capabilities above and below the surface.

Our multi-layered, distributed systems are specially designed for the reduced size, weight, and power needs of autonomous unmanned vehicles, and of off-board system deployments that are moored, bottomed, or drifting. These high-performance acoustic and non-acoustic sensor systems will provide the U.S. Navy with flexible, programmable solutions for threat submarine detection, classification, localization, and tracking in both littoral and open-ocean environments.

Our team also contributes to the overall synchronization of these unmanned platforms with innovative undersea communications and navigation payloads.

Current focus areas of our Maritime Sensing R&D team

Sensor technologies are constantly evolving, but right now, our advanced Maritime Sensing R&D efforts are directed toward:

  • High-power, wide-band, efficient low-frequency acoustic transducers
  • Novel applications of undersea technologies to evolving Navy missions
  • Low size, weight, and power open-architecture unmanned undersea vehicle payloads
  • Undersea positioning systems
  • Underwater acoustic communications
  • Algorithms for underwater target detection, classification, localization and tracking
  • High-frequency hardware technology and processing

Related technologies

We recently completed final stages of an undersea navigation and positioning system for DARPA known as POSYDON. This system aims to enhance the U.S. Navy's ability to provide precise, global positioning throughout the ocean basins. This will allow undersea vehicles to accurately navigate while remaining below the ocean's surface.
