Racing for Veterans Returning to Civilian Life

Participants compete in the 8th Annual Veterans Day Classic, held at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Tennessee.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, more than 450 BAE Systems employees, military veterans, and local residents participated in the company’s 8th Annual Veterans Day Classic, held at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, Tenn.

The race consisted of a 13.1 mile half marathon and a 5K nature walk though Holston’s grounds, filled with scenic landscape and wildlife.

This year’s Veterans Day Classic raised approximately $18,000. The proceeds were donated to Team Red White & Blue, which helps support military veterans as they make the transition from service members to civilians. The group organizes social and physical fitness-themed events to promote community support and camaraderie for veterans and their families.

“We saw a really nice increase in participation this year,” said Wendell Jones, a race organizer and manager of sales and marketing for the Holston ammunition plant. “This year, we saw an additional 150 runners sign up. I attribute much of that to the fact we partnered with more local runners groups, increasing awareness of the race.
“I love working on this event because it’s in line with the mission of BAE Systems,” Jones continued. “We support warfighters serving in uniform. It’s nice to serve them when they return to civilian life as well. This is one of the best parts of my job.”
