BAE Systems bolstering workplace safety at munitions site through relationship with DEKRA

U.S. Army’s Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, Tennessee
BAE Systems has signed on with safety consulting firm DEKRA, a global leader in workplace safety, to enhance safety efforts and procedures at the U.S. Army’s Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, Tennessee.

The relationship further demonstrates BAE Systems’ commitment to ensuring that the production of munitions and explosives for the Army is carried out as safely as possible.

DEKRA’s Executive Leading with Safety® program is designed to help enhance safety leadership knowledge and skills for upper level managers and directors at the plant operated by BAE Systems. Through DEKRA’s extended training of our senior leadership, we will continue to shift our focus from preventing injuries to reducing risks around potential hazards that could cause serious injuries and fatalities.

“Our team is committed to operational excellence and delivering readiness for our customers,” said Brian Gathright, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Ordnance Systems Inc. “Developing energetics is inherently dangerous, and our safety culture is the foundation on which our team stands as we carry out our mission. Continuous improvement of our safety protocols in every part of our work is essential to our mission success. Today, and every day, we must be on this safety journey together.”

Designed with a belief that safety starts at the top, the DEKRA’s Executive Leading with Safety® program creates a positive change in safety leadership behavior. This leads to a higher shared organizational value for safety. The result aims to help employees remain constantly motivated to reduce risks, which adds up to fewer injuries and illnesses.

“We are excited to work with BAE Systems to help their employees at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant achieve their safety goals, and their commitments to each other, their families, and the community,” said DEKRA’s Angelica Grindle, vice president of client engagement.

“Through this arrangement, we will help senior and frontline leaders develop the expertise and skills needed to lead their organization effectively and develop an organizational culture that creates focus on controlling risks and results in everyone going home safely to their families.”

The Holston Army Ammunition Plant is a major supplier of explosive materials to the U.S. Department of Defense.
