Sarah joined BAE Systems as a Degree Apprentice, where she completed a range of placements. This gave her a well-rounded view of the roles available across the business, and helped her to decide what she wanted to do next.

Growing up in the North West, BAE Systems’ reputation is hard to ignore. I knew of the shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, but I’ve always been fascinated by Aerospace. I remember seeing a BAE Systems Air presentation and being drawn in by the rapid advancements in technology, and what seemed like endless opportunities for career development. It looked like an exciting industry to be a part of.

From a young age, I’d always had a passion and natural talent for STEM subjects. I started my journey with BAE Systems after completing my A Levels, joining as a Degree Apprentice in Engineering.

As part of my apprenticeship, I’ve been able to complete a number of placements in different engineering functions, giving me a well-rounded view of the many different roles and projects across the business. I’m in my final year now, working on our future combat air programme as a Crew Systems Engineer.

Before starting my apprenticeship, I saw myself landing a career in Product Design, but after completing a placement working on the Combat Air Demonstrator programme, I knew that I wanted to be involved for the long haul. It’s a fast-paced project, working with a great bunch of driven and enthusiastic team members who are so eager to share their knowledge and skills to help you succeed.

It’s a really exciting time to be involved in combat air, and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is the highlight of my career so far!

Outside of my day-to-day responsibilities, I’m involved in the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The WES is a charity and professional network of female engineers, who aim to support women in engineering to achieve their full potential, and encourages the industry to be more diverse and inclusive. It’s inspiring to be part of a community of empowered and motivated women specialising in roles that have historically been heavily dominated by men.

I’m proud that I get the opportunity to inspire young people to consider a career in STEM. Lots of young people have the perception that engineering is just building things, but it’s much more than that; I want to try and break down the stigma of working on the shop floor.

My advice to anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship at BAE Systems would be to just do it – take on the experience. There’s endless opportunities to learn and grow, and it’s a great place to kick-start your career.
