Plaque for Frank Roe unveiled at Lytham Hall

Frank Edwin Roe, CBE, and former Managing Director of BAe Military Aircraft Division has been posthumously recognised for securing Lytham Hall for the benefit of the community who are still enjoying its use decades later.

Frank was a founding member of the Lytham Town Trust and set about seeking funding from the then-Chief Executive of BAe Military Aircraft Division for the company to make a donation in 1996 to a sum of £1 million so the Trust could purchase Lytham Hall and the 78 acres of surrounding land, ensuring its future.
Described as one of the finest Georgian houses in Lancashire and spanning over four centuries, Lytham Hall is now an attractive destination hosting group tours, weddings, live music, a fine dining restaurant and café all surrounded by picturesque parklands for visitors to enjoy.

Ahead of his time, Frank recognised the importance for companies to give back to the communities where they are located and finally his commitment and dedication to Lytham has been recognised by a plaque at the Hall. After passing away in 2014 his family were in attendance to accept the plaque on his behalf which is situated near the cafe.

David Gill, Lytham Town Hall Trust Chairman, said: “this was a very special and overdue moment for the Hall. Frank’s foresight in keeping these important buildings alive and available for the people of Lytham has meant that the Hall has become an attractive destination for days out and events. We’re so pleased that Frank’s work and dedication to Lytham Hall, since its purchase in 1996, is finally being recognised and locals can learn more about Frank on their next visit.”

Bishop Aukland born and bred, Frank moved to Preston as the first Graduate Apprentice recruited by the English Electric Company in 1946. He undertook several roles within BAe Military Aircraft Division, heading up the Wind Tunnel Department in 1950 and eventually working his way up through the ranks to become Managing Director in 1986.

Living in Lytham for the duration of his career he had a desire to give back to the place and community that had become his honorary home and in 1990 established the Lytham Town Trust. Nearly three decades later a member of BAE Systems still sits on the trust’s board today and current BAE Systems Lytham Town Trust Director and Business Development Director for Air Sector, Andy Lavin, says; “supporting our communities is as important to BAE Systems now as it was when Frank kick-started this in 1996. We’re proud to remain on the board and continue to shape and support Lytham Hall so it can be continued to be enjoyed for many years to come.”
