Jennifer joined BAE Systems as a graduate in Supply Chain and has since built a career spanning procurement, category management, supply chain leadership and manufacturing, demonstrating how careers can evolve across functions, sectors and leadership levels at BAE Systems.

When I joined BAE Systems as a graduate, I was attracted by the scale of the organisation and the opportunity to contribute to work that genuinely matters. What I didn't realise at the time was just how many different career pathways would be available to me throughout my journey.

My career has taken me across supply chain, procurement, category management, business leadership and manufacturing, with each role providing new experiences, challenges and opportunities to learn. I've worked across Air and Naval Ships programmes, collaborated with teams around the world and continually expanded my perspective on how different functions come together to pioneer innovation and help protect national capability.

One of the things I've valued most is the ability to explore new opportunities without leaving the organisation. Returning to BAE Systems after gaining experience elsewhere opened my eyes to the breadth of roles available across the business. From my first people management role through to senior leadership positions, I've been encouraged to step beyond my comfort zone, build new skills and take on increasingly complex challenges.

Throughout my career, learning has remained a constant. Alongside on-the-job experience, I've completed professional qualifications including MCIPS and an Executive MBA, participated in leadership programmes and benefited from the guidance of mentors who challenged me to think bigger about what might be possible. Their encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities I may not otherwise have considered, including moving into manufacturing leadership, a function I had long been passionate about.

One of the proudest moments of my career was standing on the flight deck of HMS Prince of Wales ahead of deployment and seeing first-hand the real-world impact of the work our teams deliver. Equally, seeing the transformation of the Clyde shipyards through investment, innovation and collaboration continues to remind me what can be achieved when talented people unite around a common purpose.

"Some of the biggest opportunities in my career came from saying yes to challenges before I felt completely ready. The support of mentors, leaders and colleagues gave me the confidence to keep growing, explore different pathways and build a career that's evolved alongside my ambitions."

Alongside career progression, I've also been supported through important life moments. As a working parent, flexibility and supportive leadership allowed me to balance family life while continuing to develop professionally. Having people who believed in my potential, even during moments of self-doubt, made a huge difference.

My advice to anyone considering a career at BAE Systems is simple: stay curious, build relationships and don't be afraid to explore new directions. You don't have to have your entire career mapped out from day one. With opportunities across functions, sectors and geographies, your next role could be one you haven't even imagined yet.
