After serving in the Royal Air Force, Jack joined BAE Systems through the graduate programme. Combining military experience with a passion for learning, he’s found a career that offers both continuity and challenge, while helping support those still serving on the front line.

I joined BAE Systems after leaving the RAF, where I worked as a weapons technician. What attracted me was that it felt like a happy medium for my transition from military to civilian life. The nature of the work and organisational structure were similar enough to feel comfortable and easy to adjust to, while bringing fresh new opportunity and challenge.

The transition from military life can be quite daunting. You’re suddenly stepping into an entirely new environment, and it can feel like you’re becoming the little fish in a very big pond again. BAE Systems supported that transition from the very beginning, from accommodating military exit dates through to remote interviews while I was still serving.

For me, ForcesNet also played a huge role. Joining the network helped me connect with people who understood the challenges of transition and who had already navigated the path themselves.

Finding opportunity through the graduate programme

Although I’m not a traditional graduate entrant, the early careers team saw value in my experiences, capacity to learn and ability to demonstrate the behaviours valued at BAE Systems.

What you do can be taught, but how you do it is entirely your unique strength.

The programme has given me incredible opportunities to develop. From immersion week and networking events to collaborative projects across the business, I’ve been able to meet people from different backgrounds, learn from their experiences and settle into the organisation quickly.

BAE Systems has also enabled me to step outside of my comfort zone, whether that’s working with senior leaders, conducting interviews, taking part in team projects or simply feeling confidence enough to speak up and offer my thoughts.

In just a few short months, I have felt incredibly valued as a person, respected for my skills and abilities, and given the confidence and guidance needed to develop my career.

Finding purpose in the work

My military experience translates into my role every day. Every skill and experience gained during military life has found a place in my current role.

One thing I’ve particularly enjoyed is gaining an insight into the work that happens behind the scenes to support our armed forces. On the front line equipment needs to perform as intended every single time, with real lives depending on it.

Helping maintain that level of quality, safety and effectiveness gives an immense sense of purpose. I still have friends serving today, and knowing my work contributes to keeping them equipped and safe gives me great pride.

Belonging through community

BAE Systems is a very welcoming place to work. My team is made up of people from a wide variety of backgrounds who work seamlessly towards shared goals. I feel able to approach anyone with a question or opinion, knowing my input will be valued.

That sense of belonging extends beyond my immediate role. Since joining ForcesNet, I’ve taken part in the Great Tommy Sleep Out, helping to raise funds and awareness to support homeless veterans.

I’m now leading plans for my own community event through the network. ForcesNet helped me feel welcome and connected with like-minded people, and my aim is to contribute that same experience for others.
