When I joined BAE Systems after university, I was excited by the variety of opportunities available and the chance to work across different areas of the defence and cyber sector. I knew I wanted to build a career in technology, but what attracted me most was the opportunity to explore new specialisms while contributing to work with real-world impact.
My route into software engineering was far from traditional. Before joining BAE Systems, I taught myself to code from my bedroom and learned much of what I knew about cyber security through podcasts and personal research. Since joining BAE Systems, I’ve developed both my technical expertise and confidence, working professionally across multiple programming languages and contributing to complex discussions alongside experienced engineers. Through training and development opportunities, I’ve expanded my skills in areas including Android vulnerability research, penetration testing, Python and C++, continually growing my capability while helping pioneer innovative cyber solutions.
The flexibility to explore different teams and technologies has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. During the graduate programme, I was encouraged to connect with colleagues across the organisation, learn from their experiences and discover where my strengths could make the biggest impact. Today, as part of the Operational Cyber team, I work across Android, iOS and web development projects, with every challenge bringing new opportunities to learn, collaborate and innovate.
What I value most is the supportive and inclusive culture. As a woman in software engineering, having access to mentoring through the Women in Cyber Security network was incredibly valuable early in my career. It gave me confidence, helped me see what was possible and reinforced that I could thrive in this field. The collaborative environment means people are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work, share ideas openly and support one another's growth.
Through international cyber capacity-building engagements, I’ve also had opportunities to work with stakeholders across the globe. Collaborating with organisations facing different cyber security challenges broadened my perspective and allowed me to contribute to strengthening their resilience. Seeing the positive impact of that work was both meaningful and rewarding.
