I was initially drawn to BAE Systems because of the opportunity it offered to build a long and successful career. Being local to the area, I’d always been aware of the business and the chance to be part of the aerospace industry gave me something to focus on and take a real interest in.
I joined in 2002 as an aircraft engineering apprentice. Those early years gave me a strong foundation, combining structured training with hands on experience and helping me build the skills and confidence I needed to progress. From the start, I valued being part of a team where knowledge is shared and experience is built over time.
After completing my apprenticeship, I spent the majority of my career - nearly 20 years - working on the Typhoon programme. Over that time, I’ve also had the opportunity to contribute to other areas of the business, including short periods on F 35 and working on-site at RAF Coningsby. I’m now involved in the development programme for Tempest, which has given me the chance to apply my experience in a new and evolving environment.
Being able to build something with your own hands and see how it contributes over time is what’s kept me motivated throughout my career.DominicFitter, UK
Working on-site allows me to stay close to the product and be involved in how each aircraft comes together. I’ve seen first‑hand how technology and manufacturing methods have developed over the years and it’s rewarding to continue learning while applying the experience I’ve built. There’s a real sense of pride in being part of that process.
The team environment has always been an important part of my journey. It’s built on shared knowledge, trust and experience, where people support each other and take pride in the work they do. That consistency has been key to staying motivated and continuing to develop over time.
Being part of a business with long‑term programmes also brings a strong sense of purpose. You can see how the work evolves and grows over years and how each contribution fits into something much bigger. For me, that continuity combined with the opportunity to keep learning is what has made this career so rewarding.
