Growing up, a career in space always felt exciting, but distant. It was something you watched, not something you did.
Today, that's changing.
As investment in space technology continues to grow, so does the demand for people who can help shape the next generation of capabilities. From protecting critical infrastructure to enabling communications and supporting national security, space is playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives.
That's what attracted me to BAE Systems Digital Intelligence – I joined as a Degree Apprentice.
Before starting this journey, I never imagined I'd be working in the space sector. I began my career as a truck driver and had taken a very different path. What appealed to me was the opportunity to be part of an industry that's pushing the boundaries of what's possible while helping build capabilities that make a real difference.
The programme gave me the opportunity to retrain and combine academic learning with hands-on experience. One day a week is spent studying towards a degree in Space Systems Engineering, with the rest spent applying that knowledge in a real business environment. That balance has accelerated my learning and allowed me to contribute to meaningful work from day one.

Being part of a team working on advanced space technologies is incredibly rewarding. There is a real sense of collaboration, curiosity and shared purpose. Everyone is focused on creating solutions that will support future capability, and there's a collective drive to keep learning and improving.
One of the most exciting things about working in space is that the industry is still evolving. New technologies, new opportunities and new ways of thinking are constantly emerging. It means you're continually learning, exploring new ideas and helping shape a sector that's growing rapidly both in the UK and globally.
BAE Systems' continued investment in space reflects the important role the sector will play in the future. Developing the next generation of engineers, innovators and specialists is essential to building the capabilities needed to protect, connect and support society in the years ahead.
