After serving as an Army Reservist, Chris found new ways to continue supporting the armed forces in his role at BAE Systems - gaining new skills and a new career in cyber security where he safeguards critical systems - beyond the uniform.

When I finished high school, I wasn’t entirely sure what direction I wanted to take. I worked as a security guard for a time before enlisting in the Australian Army Reserves - a decision that would shape not only my character, but also my future career.

My time in the Army gave me structure, purpose and a strong sense of responsibility. It was also where I realised, I was drawn to cyber security and technology - fields where protecting people, systems and national interests takes on a whole new meaning.

Meet Chris

Finding a new path after military service

After completing my service, I did what I believed were all the right things. I attended industry events, networked wherever I could and invested heavily in my own professional development. Despite my efforts, breaking into the technology sector was more challenging than I expected.

A fellow Army colleague introduced me to WithYouWithMe and that conversation proved to be a turning point. I signed up for the free training and enrolled in the Linux Pipeline, where I could build practical, industry‑relevant skills at my own pace. The training gave me confidence, structure and a clearer pathway into a cyber career.

That journey led me to BAE Systems Australia, where I now work as a Systems Administrator. It’s a role that aligns perfectly with my interests and values - combining problem‑solving, continuous learning and contributing to something far bigger than myself.

Working at BAE Systems allows me to continue protecting Australia’s security, just in a different way. I’m constantly picking up new skills and the team around me is incredibly supportive and encouraging. They understand that this is just the beginning of my tech career and give me the space to learn, grow and challenge myself.

It’s incredibly rewarding to continue protecting Australia’s security outside of the armed forces. I’m
learning something new every day, supported by a team that understands this is just the beginning
of my tech career and encourages me to keep growing.
Chris
Systems Administrator and Veteran, Australia

Being exposed to BAE Systems’ culture, leadership and organisational standards has helped me understand what’s truly possible in a technology career. I feel proud knowing the work I do helps protect critical systems and supports Australia’s national security.

BAE Systems supported me at every stage of my transition - from military service to cyber security professional. The company recognises the value veterans bring and provides real opportunities to pioneer new careers while continuing to protect what matters most. My advice to other veterans considering their next step is simple: keep your options open and don’t be afraid to retrain. With the right support and determination, it’s possible to build a fulfilling civilian career that still delivers purpose, impact and pride.
