Aircraft countermeasures systems of today will not have the capabilities to keep up with the new and emerging threats of tomorrow. The Smart D2 system is the next-generation answer to these threats – driven by constant communication between system, expendables, and crew to initiate the most effective and efficient response to increase survivability and bring warfighters home safely.
Smart system and expendables
Essential, smart elements of the Smart D2 system are in constant communication: the programmer, sequencer, dispenser, and expendables. The programmer contains a database of known threats and identifies the appropriate payload, quantity, and dispensing intervals for each countermeasure. It provides two-way communication of mission-critical information so the pilot can confidently make informed decisions on the spot.
The system includes the NATO standard interface for a single communication point between dispenser and smart countermeasures – the Smart Stores Communication Interface (SSCI). This uses the existing dispenser system’s interface to maintain backward compatibility with legacy payloads, and interrogates them in order to upload information pre-dispense to maximize effectiveness.
The Smart D2 system maximizes survivability by allowing the user to tailor its reaction to each unique threat. Once the countermeasure of choice is dispensed, individual “smart” capabilities target threats for a tailored defeat.
We are developing the capability to dispense:
- Smart flares based on specific threats
- Smart radio-frequency (RF) decoys to defeat the majority of RF-guided surface-to-air and air-to-air threats
- Smart hard kill interceptors
By monitoring the quantity and location of each expendable on the aircraft, the system enables greater mission planning and proactively manages countermeasure inventory. This automatic inventory management removes human error from the equation, ensuring there will never be expired expendables on the aircraft – empowering the pilot to confidently take on any mission.
Countermeasure efficiency & flexibility
The Smart D2 system expends exactly what is needed to defeat each unique threat and has the flexibility to work with current, unique, and future expendables. It proactively manages its inventory by using the oldest expendables or those with the shortest carriage life remaining first. This cuts cost by eliminating waste and drives inventory efficiencies that are a catalyst for longer, more effective, and flexible missions.
We work with the next-generation of smart countermeasure manufacturers and use additive manufacturing and advanced injection molding to deliver our system to the warfighter faster and at a better cost.
The backbone of the Smart D2 system is its heritage from the ALE-47 Airborne Countermeasures Dispenser System, which identifies and defeats infrared and radio frequency missiles in the battlespace, and is the trusted system of choice for aircraft and aircrew survivability for the U.S. armed forces and international allies. Over 4,000 ALE-47 systems have been installed on aircraft in more than 30 countries.
