Now four years into his apprenticeship, Oliver plays an active role in one of the UK’s most ambitious defence programmes while continuing to develop his skills as an early-career engineer.
In his role at Leonardo, Oliver supports ISANKE and ICS, a core technology underpinning the UK’s Future Combat Air System and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). His work contributes to the development of next‑generation sensing and information‑advantage capabilities designed to operate in complex and contested environments. Alongside his technical responsibilities, Oliver regularly represents Leonardo and Team Tempest at industry engagement activities, helping to showcase the technologies Leonardo is developing as part of GCAP through the GCAP Electronics Evolution Consortium (G2E).
I learned about Team Tempest soon after joining and wanted to know more about this exciting project. From working alongside apprentices in partner companies to inspiring the next generation at international air shows, Team Tempest has been one of the most rewarding areas to work in within defence.Oliver, Systems Engineering
A standout aspect of Oliver’s journey has been presenting Leonardo’s ISANKE and ICS technology through the company’s interactive display table at a number of high‑profile events. These have included opportunities to present the work being carried out at Leonardo to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton and Astronaut Tim Peake, highlighting both the importance of the programme and the role early‑career engineers play in delivering it.
