After leaving the Royal Navy in 2009, I joined BAE Systems for the first time as an Engineer within Surface Ships. That initial move gave me a relatively smooth transition into civilian life. Many of my colleagues were ex-military, and working on ships and equipment I recognised from my time in service helped me feel connected and supported from the outset.
After a period away from the business, including running an ex-military recruitment franchise and working across apprenticeships in both education and corporate environments, I felt drawn back. In 2018, an opportunity within Early Careers came up and it felt right to return. I believed in the purpose of the organisation and wanted to contribute in a different way.
Finding purpose through people and development
Since rejoining BAE Systems, I’ve been fortunate to progress through several roles across Early Careers and Skills, including multiple promotions and a stretch secondment. Each role has given me the opportunity to broaden my experience, develop new skills and gain insight into different parts of the organisation.
In my current role as Early Careers Manager for Digital Intelligence, the last few years have been particularly transformative. Our teams have navigated significant change, including transitioning parts of the business, establishing a more structured early careers provision and responding to an evolving early careers landscape. It has been tough at times, but also incredibly rewarding.
Belonging, inclusion and community
BAE Systems continues to invest in creating a more inclusive and supportive working environment. From employee communities like ForcesNet to tools that support inclusive learning requirements and open conversations around being your authentic self, there is a clear commitment to belonging. Even where I’m not directly involved, being part of these networks reinforces that sense of connection.
Alongside my role, I’ve also taken part in initiatives such as Armed Forces Day and the Great Tommy Sleepout, supporting organisations that work with the veteran community, which remains something I care deeply about.
Being part of a large, structured organisation gives me a strong sense of belonging. I genuinely believe in the purpose of what we do and that makes the work meaningful.AnthonyEarly Careers & Skills Development Manager and Veteran, UK
Protecting what matters, together
My military background still shapes how I work today. While my technical knowledge is less relevant in my current role, the values I developed during my time in service - teamwork, adaptability and discipline - are highly transferable. Knowing that the work we do helps protect those still serving, as well as communities and future talent, is something I’m proud to be part of.
For anyone leaving the military and considering a civilian career, my advice is simple. The skills, knowledge and behaviours you’ve built are valued and needed.
