When he thanked those colleagues Jeremy was told to simply ‘pay it forward mate, do the same of others when you get the chance.” That’s exactly what he’s striving to do.
Jeremy joined the Australian Regular Army in 2005 after growing up on a Victorian sheep farm. It was the opportunity for adventure and challenge that drew him to the defence force.
Throughout his career Jeremy held the position of Air Defence Officer and served in Afghanistan, the United States of America, United Kingdom and multiple domestic operations here in Australia.
Jeremy describes leading solders as his greatest highlight from his time in service.
“Australian soldiers are the finest in the world and there is no greater privilege than to have the opportunity to lead them,” he said.
As with many serving personnel it was the need to settle down and start a family that drove Jeremy’s decision to transition out of the Army and settle in Adelaide. Jeremy was presented with an opportunity to pursue a new path outside of defence and so began his civilian journey.
Fast forward to today and Jeremy is Head of the Global Access Program and Chair of the BAE Systems Australian Veterans Advisory Committee. It would be hard to find a more driven individual when it comes to advocating and championing the needs of his fellow veterans.
“I focus my efforts on supporting others to find meaningful employment. Whether this be through mentoring, guidance or networking, it all seems to be in great demand and often plays out very positively.”
As a soldier, thinking about how the family would cope should something happen to them while serving is, “at the forefront of your mind at all times”. So it’s comforting to know that organisation’s like Legacy exist and reassuring that the family will be taken care of should the unthinkable happen.
Jeremy is thrilled that BAE Systems sees the value in supporting such a worthy cause.
“Legacy is a fantastic organisation and allows us to make an impact where it matters most.”
When asked what it means to carry a torch for Legacy in this Centenary relay, Jeremy said, “It’s an immense honour. I feel it’s the beginning of my personal journey in support of Legacy and I’m proud to be able to represent the wider BAE Systems community.”
It’s safe to say this veteran has certainly lived up to, and beyond the request to pay it forward.
