Beau's story
Beau's story

Beau is Co-Chair of the Disability and Neurodiversity Allies (DNA) Employee Resource Group (ERG) at BAE Systems Australia. With 18 years in corporate real estate across both public and private sectors, Beau understands the complexities of navigating the professional landscape as a neurodiverse woman. Her story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a passionate commitment to creating truly inclusive workplaces.

“Leading the DNA ERG is a privilege. It’s about creating a space where neurodiversity is not just accepted but celebrated, and where everyone feels empowered to contribute their unique talents.”

Beau’s career journey has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. Living with gender discrimination, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and a chronic pain disorder, she initially struggled to conform to traditional corporate expectations.

She often felt her communication style and way of thinking were at odds with the norm. However, through introspection and a growing understanding of her own strengths, she came to embrace her neurodiversity as a superpower.

“For a long time, I thought I had to hide my differences to succeed. But I’ve learned that my unique perspective is my greatest asset. It allows me to see problems and solutions in ways others might not.”

This realisation ignited Beau’s passion for advocating for others facing similar challenges. She firmly believes that diverse teams, where different perspectives are valued, are the key to innovation and success.

Navigating challenges, finding support

Beau acknowledges the obstacles she has encountered throughout her career, including the subtle and sometimes overt biases prevalent in many industries.

However, she also emphasises the crucial role of supportive mentors and managers who have championed her growth. She recalls a particularly impactful piece of advice from Bobbette Scott (now Partner and Managing Director of Knight Frank), who encouraged her to embrace her inherent strengths rather than trying to fit a pre-defined mould.

“Bobbette’s guidance was transformative. She helped me understand that my resilience, empathy, and tenacity were not weaknesses, but powerful tools that could propel my career forward.”

Beau expresses gratitude for the support she has received from BAE Systems, including the opportunities to take on executive roles early in her career. She stresses the importance of open communication and encourages women to confidently advocate for their needs.

Building a seamless journey

Beau is enthusiastic about the future of diversity and inclusion at BAE Systems. She highlights the DNA ERG’s recent partnership with the Australian Disability Network and their commitment to building a ‘seamless journey for all’ by refining attraction and retention processes for neurodiverse individuals.

She emphasises the need for ongoing education and mentorship programs to empower both employees and leaders in cultivating truly inclusive environments.

“We’re focused on dismantling barriers and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive."

This includes providing resources and support for neurodiverse employees and equipping leaders with the knowledge and tools to build inclusive teams.”

This International Women’s Day, Beau’s story serves as a powerful reminder to celebrate individuality, champion inclusion, and recognize the immense potential that lies within diverse minds.

She embodies the principle that true progress is not just about representation, but about fostering a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
