Overview
Precise Leak Detection
MethaneSAT, which launched on March 4, 2024, is locating and measuring atmospheric constituents, such as accidental methane leakage during fossil fuel production, across the globe.
The spectrometer is designed to perform leak detection with a precision and at a scale never before achieved. MethaneSAT data can help the oil and gas industry to quickly identify and fix leaks, reducing product loss and improving operational efficiency. According to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), repairing leaks could save $26 million in wasted gas annually.
The mission was developed by MethaneSAT, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Incorporated, a leading international nonprofit organization.
Our Role
We were chosen to develop the high-performance advanced spectrometer instrument for the mission. Two extremely sensitive spectrometers sit at the heart of the instrument that will measure a narrow part of the shortwave infrared spectrum where methane absorbs light. We also provided flight system integration and test, as well as launch and commissioning support.
BAE Systems has more than six decades of experience providing leading-edge systems, delivering instruments that span the electromagnetic spectrum for a wide range of government and commercial applications.
