For three years, we led the UK FCDO-funded Indo-Pacific Cyber Programme consortium to help national cyber agencies and critical infrastructure organisations across the region detect threats, build resilience and forge lasting partnerships. Sir Stuart Atha is the Senior NATO Advisor at BAE Systems. He is also Head of the UK delegation to the NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG) and is leading the UK’s role in hosting the NIAG Plenary in Portsmouth (23-25 June), bringing together NATO, governments and industry to strengthen capability delivery and industrial cooperation across the Alliance.

In today’s operational environment, our customers face a fundamental paradox. Take a naval task group. At any moment, it may be required to deploy at pace – responding to a crisis, supporting allies, or safeguarding vital sea lanes. Platforms, people and data must be ready to act, often with very little warning.

The UK’s national security landscape is changing at unprecedented speed. Technology has become the primary arena in which threats emerge, evolve, and are countered. From AI enabled cyberattacks to autonomous systems and digitally driven criminal networks, the pace of technological change is reshaping the strategic environment. Across government and industry, I am seeing a growing consensus: the UK’s future security will depend on our ability to harness technology as effectively as those who seek to undermine it.

The same way a human develops judgement through repeated exposure to the real-world, autonomous military systems need to be trained through repeated exposure to operational scenarios. This is where high-fidelity synthetic environments become essential.

The UK gets more than 135 million traveler arrivals every year. With threats evolving across multiple domains, maintaining border security is a significant challenge.
