Hawaii facility recognized with DISA’s global “2019 Facility of the Year” award

On the third largest Hawaiian island, 2,500 miles off America’s west coast, is a U.S. Department of Defense communications complex named the Navy Satellite Communications Facility Wahiawa.

Nestled between O’ahu’s Ko’olau Range – a mountain-like segment of a dormant volcano – the facility provides satellite communications throughout the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility. It was recently named the 2019 “Global Facility of the Year” by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

BAE Systems’ on-site program manager, Kendric Chun, oversees a more than 60-person team that provides satellite integration capabilities to connect tactical terminals to other deployed terminals, both in-theater and elsewhere, for seamless interoperability with the DoD Information Networks (DoDIN). The team’s work ensures that warfighters across the globe have the ability to effectively and reliably communicate. In 2019, the team—comprised of 24/7 operators, electronic technicians, and system administrators—supported more than 2,100 missions, a 15% increase in mission load compared to the previous year.

“I’m really proud of our team’s dedication and hard work that contributed to this award,” said Chun. “It’s a huge honor to be recognized globally for our accomplishment in maintaining the reliability of the facility and these systems because they are critical to national security.”

The DISA award identifies and formally recognizes outstanding DISA facilities. The sustained, superior performance of the Navy Satellite Communications Facility Wahiawa has contributed greatly to the effectiveness of the DoDIN where it is operated, secured, and managed. It competed against 12 similar facilities around the world in the category of Large Joint Information Environment Satellite Communications Gateway.

“Congrats to everyone on our team who continually puts in their best,” said Chun.
