HMS Audacious delivered to the Royal Navy

The latest addition to the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet...

HMS Audacious, the fourth Astute-class attack submarine, delivered to the Royal Navy.

As it rounded the tip of Walney Island for the first and final time, April 6th 2020 marked the departure from BAE Systems of HMS Audacious, the latest addition to the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.

Audacious has joined her three Barrow-built sisters at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde. Weighing 7,400 tonnes they are able to glide through the water more silently than any other submarine.

The new submarine represents the latest example of the kind of technological advances that have kept the Cumbrian shipyard at the forefront of submarine construction since the 1900s.

Officially named in December 2016, HMS Audacious was launched in April 2017 and conducted her first dive in January 2018. Equipped with world-leading sensors, the Astute-class carry both Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles (TLAM) and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. The 97 metre long boats can circumnavigate the globe submerged, producing their own oxygen and drinking water.

HMS Audacious will join sister-submarines HMS Astute ,  HMS Ambush and HMS Artful  which are already in-service and operating from Faslane.  A further three boats – named Anson, Agamemnon and Agincourt - are currently under construction at BAE Systems in Barrow.

As well as Astute BAE Systems are also constructing the Dreadnought class submarine which will replace the Barrow-built Vanguard class submarines to maintain the UK’s continuous at sea deterrent (CASD).

With locations around the UK including Frimley Park, Weymouth and Filton, BAE Systems Submarines offer a wide variety of career opportunities.

Louis Bull Audacious' Commanding Officer
Being a Commanding Officer is the ultimate highlight of my career. The Audacious command is challenging but it's a huge opportunity as well. She's a step forward, a leap forward. There have been upgrades to the Combat system, the Navigation system and the Sonar system. To get her out and into sea trials will be a huge highlight.

Commander Louis Bull, Audacious' Commanding Officer.

"Our workforce has built up a global reputation for innovation, skill and technical expertise."
