A fantastic weekend of sport was enjoyed by thousands of athletes and all of those who went along to support the UK Corporate Games held in Preston over the weekend (14 &15 July). Competing for the first time against some of the biggest companies in the country such as Vodafone, CSC, ASDA and Ernst & Young the BAE Systems team had a very successful weekend.
80 of our employees took their place in the BAE Systems team and competed in a wide variety of sports, bringing home 13 medals and a huge number of top eight, point winning finishes.
Confirmed in the official results issued on Tuesday (17th July) BAE Systems have been declared winners division five (for companies with teams of 51 to 100 athletes).
Some highlights from those who took part:
Neil Appleton, Soccer 6’s Captain & Gold Medallist: “It was a difficult weekend but we’re obviously very happy to come away with the Gold. In the end our Class showed winning the event, scoring 25 goals & only conceding 2!”
Tom Kelly, Tennis Team & Silver Medallist: “Great to be a part of it, a really friendly atmosphere among all the teams, punctuated with some fierce sporting competition.”
Dragon Boat Team, Silver Medallists: “We had the most amazing weekend, we are very proud of what we managed to achieve, it was great to meet so many new people and have a good laugh as we did. We are still surprised how well we did but it just goes to show what determination, teamwork and a lot of hard graft can achieve.”
Joanne Mitchell, Netball Team Captain: “Overall the weekend was a success and really showcased the range of high quality sporting facilities in and around Preston. The event was well organised with plenty of friendly rivalry and banter between teams. It was a great opportunity to meet people from our business and other UK businesses you wouldn’t necessarily be exposed to.!”
Kieron Loughnane, Rugby 7’s Captain & Silver Medallist: “A fantastic weekend of competitive rugby played in the spirit that was intended. Brilliant performances from the nine lads who took part and a great second place result for BAE Systems”.
Rachael Hoyle, BAE Systems Team Leader and Netball player: “I am really pleased with how the weekend went, the success we achieved across all the sports was beyond my expectations. The enthusiasm and professionalism shown by the BAE Systems Team is a credit to the Company, everyone enjoyed themselves and there was very much an inclusive ethos across the team”.
