BAE Systems has named a new general manager of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, effective Mar 29, 2021.
Kirk Johnson, General Manager of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant
Kirk Johnson will head up the operation and join the senior leadership team of BAE Systems, Inc., Ordnance Systems Inc. (OSI) led by vice president and general manager Brian Gathright.

Johnson joins OSI after seven years at the Lubrizol Corporation, a provider of specialty chemicals for transportation, industrial and consumer markets. During his time at Lubrizol he served as the manufacturing director for specialty and industrial additives, and later vice president of manufacturing for Lubrizol division Chemtool. He has a bachelor degree in chemical engineering from Auburn University, and has completed several executive courses at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. “Kirk’s strong background in manufacturing and quality program management will add great value to the leadership team,” Gathright said. “His focus will be to lead the team to continue to drive a strong culture of safety, operational excellence, and high levels of efficiency for our customer.”

He succeeds Mike Bocek, who will join BAE Systems’ Combat Missions Systems division under a planned rotation.

“I thank Mike for his significant contributions. He has laid a foundation for operational and safety improvement and left his mark by managing key modernization projects on the site, including the new nitrocellulose facility which is in the commissioning phase” Gathright said.

BAE Systems has been the operating contractor for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant since 2012.
