Our commitment to veterans and reservists

Veterans

The values and behaviours displayed in the Armed Forces are closely aligned to our company behaviours – our culture is reflective of the services ethos. Your values, team spirit, skills and experience are vital in making sure the products and services we create and supply, are providing the critical edge to ensure the safety and security to our Armed Forces. All of this is underpinned by our commitment to our status as a Gold Award Recipients of the Armed Forces Covenant.

Reservists

We currently employ over 150 reservists and a number of Cadet Force Adult Instructors in the UK, making us the second-highest employer of reservists among Gold Award Recipients of the Armed Forces Covenant. As part of our pledge to the Armed Forces Covenant, we fully support our employees who are volunteering as reservists and Cadet Force Adult Instructors, by accommodating their training obligations. To demonstrate our commitment, we provide an extra 15 days of special leave specifically for this purpose. For those reservists who are mobilised, we also ensure there is a supporting system in place, to allow them to deploy and return in an efficient manner.

VetNet

VetNet is our employee-led network for veterans, reservists, and their supporters. It's a community to share and learn from each other and access support and mentoring.

With a growing membership of close to 500 employees, VetNet offers a wide variety of support and activities for our ex-military colleagues and reservists. The network actively engages in Armed Forces Week, Armistice Week, and the Invictus Games. There’s regular webinars on wellbeing, mental health, resilience, and high performance. Across the world, we’re connecting veteran networks to learn from each other, guide and grow.

Coming soon: do you want to talk to one of our ex-forces employees about their experience finding a job after the military? We’re building a VetNet portal where anyone from a military background interested in joining us has the opportunity to ask questions directly.

Armed Forces Covenant

We value the unique relationship we have with serving members and veterans. We’re a founding member of the UK Armed Forces Covenant and one of the first winners of the MoD Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award that recognises an organisation’s commitment to the Covenant – we aim to go above and beyond our current commitments in our drive to make BAE Systems a positive place for veterans to work.

From developing skills and employment opportunities, to long-standing charity partnerships, we're committed to being a Forces friendly employer.

CV and interview support

We want to help you find – and secure – the right role for you. If you’ve seen a job you like but you’re not sure how your skills translate, or you just haven’t applied for a job in a while, here’s some tips to help you present your skills and experience in the best way.

  • Keep your CV simple, in a consistent font, with clear headings for each section. Use keywords or phrases that show how you relate to the requirements of the role.
  • To prepare for an interview, re-read the job description and focus on being able to give answers to competency-based questions by using examples from your previous experience that show you have the skills we require.
  • Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, and Result) formula to help you. What’s the background situation to your example? What task needs to be done? What action did you take? And finally, what was the result? Be ready to talk about why you want the role.
  • Research as much as you can about the role and our business.
  • Listen carefully to the questions and comments that the interviewer makes.
  • Think before you answer, and always be honest.
  • Don’t assume that the interviewer knows all of your previous experience, give plenty of detail in your answers.
  • Keep your options open. After speaking to the interviewer, you may find your skills translate to additional roles at BAE Systems. Don’t be afraid to ask the question and keep an open mind.
