Lead role for radar in Formidable Shield exercise
The radar team based in Cowes will play a leading role in the Formidable Shield 2021 live demonstration exercise to be held in May 2021 by DE&S and MOD.
The MOD is investing £1.6M in Science and Technology activities to take place alongside Formidable Shield 2021, part of that effort involves development and analysis of BAE Systems radar capabilities.
Formidable Shield is a biennial exercise which brings together eight NATO countries led by the US to test integrated air and missile defence capabilities through a series of live missile firings.
Taking part in the Formidable Shield exercise is a great opportunity to work with the MOD to demonstrate the effectiveness of our current naval radar capabilities and what our radars can do to shape future requirements from the Royal Navy.

The funding enables us to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Sampson and Artisan radars on Royal Naval platforms as well as from Cowes, and the Maritime Integrated and Support Centre (MISC), some 850km from the range.
Additionally this year we’ll be demonstrating our Non Cooperative Target Recognition capability (NCTR).
